A poor shooting night at the free-throw line stood between Madison and its second huge upset win of the season on Saturday.

The Cubs shot 53 percent from the floor and three players reached double-digits in scoring, but a 5-for-12 performance at the foul line proved to be the difference in a 70-59 loss to Class 3A No. 2 Greensburg at Salm Gym on Madison’s homecoming.

Three of those misses came in the final minute as Madison was attempting to complete a large comeback.

The Cubs (11-8) trailed by 12 twice in the fourth quarter but pulled within two possessions twice, by six on a Nick Center basket with 3:10 to play and by five with 42 seconds to go on a Cooper Yancey bucket.

Yancey’s basket came after he was fouled but the senior missed the subsequent free throw that would have made it a four-point game. That miss came on the heels of two missed freebies by Nick Center a possession earlier.

The misses opened the door for Greensburg to close out the game, which it did with four-straight free throws and a basket by Lane Sparks to seal the win.

Madison hit 15 of its 26 shots from the floor in the second half for a sterling 58 percentage and went 24-for-45 (53 percent) for the game. Luke Miller scored 19 points, Center had 15 and Yancey finished with 13.

Sparks scored 22 points and had seven rebounds to lead Greensburg, which improved to 19-1 in the season, Drew Comer had 17 points and Andrew Welage scored 15. The Pirates shot 54 percent (25-for-46) from the floor and 14-for-25 at the line.

Madison caps off its run of six games in 13 days on Tuesday when the Cubs travel to Indian Creek.
