Sarah Anderson scored a win in her 2014 debut as Southwestern girls tennis opened the season at the Paoli Individual Tournament on Saturday.

Anderson, who competed in the number two singles bracket, defeated opponents from Corydon Central and Washington 6-0 and 6-0 for the first place finish.

Abbey Garrett finished second in the number one singles tournament while Emily Watkins was third at number three singles.

In doubles action, Southwestern number one team of Jordan Worcester and Kearstin Bruther and the number two team of Meredith Webber and Heather Totten each finished second.

"It was our first action of the year and the other teams had already played three matches each," Southwestern head coach Kenny Garrett said. "We hit the ball very well and I am excited for this season to begin."

Southwestern hosts its first regular season match on Tuesday against Shawe. According to Garrett it will be a true early season test.

"We host our first match against a red-hot Shawe Hilltopper team," Garrett noted. "We will need to be ready."

Lady Hilltoppers 3-1 after 3-2 victory at Madison

Shawe girls tennis continued its early season hot streak on Saturday by scoring a 4-1 win at Madison.

The Hilltopper duo of Jenna Armstrong and Hannah Storm took home a doubles victory, defeating Madison's Hannah Brady and Emma Stacier 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Taylor Grote, Claire Higgins and Megan Hill each won in singles action. Grote defeated Anna Bruns 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, Higgins bested Riley Boone 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and Hill beat Cara Walker 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.

"Singles looked great today and I am very proud of our No. 2 doubles team," Shawe coach Steve Sims said. "Hannah and Jenna came back after being down big in the first set. They came all the way back to win in three sets. They are really starting to play well and work well together as a team."

Madison's lone win came at No. 1 doubles where Annie Marsh and Maddie Robinson defeated Carson Hambrick and Lauren Cieslinski 6-1, 6-4.

Shawe (3-1) visits Southwestern Tuesday. Madison visits Jennings County today.

Carroll wins 3, Trimble one title at NCKC tournament

Carroll County and Trimble County boys and girls tennis combined for a sweep of all four brackets on Saturday in the North Central Kentucky Conference Tournament held in Bedford.

Carroll County's Joe Gemmer defeated Gallatin's Trevor Lewis 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 in the championship match of the boys singles.

Carroll's doubles team of Noah Abercrombie and Dakota Corbin won the conference crown by defeating teammates Michael Kates and Nick Aulback 6-4, 6-0 in the championship match.

Boys semifinal results were: Singles - Trevor Lewis (GC) d. Alex Dixon (TC) 6-1, 6-1; Joe Gemmer (CC) d. Kurt Deaton (CC) 6-0, 6-5; Doubles - Abercrombie and Corbin (CC) d. Weaver and Ely (TC) 6-0, 6-0; Kate and Alback (CC) d. Wright and Carlton (GC) via forfeit.

In the girls singles tournament, Carroll County's Sarah McCarter won the conference title by defeating Gallatin County's Shelby Ackerman. No score was provided for the championship match.

The Trimble County team of Lawhorn and Hess claimed the NCKC girls doubles title by defeating the Carroll team of Kendall Conley and Emilee Walker, 6-0, 6-0.

Taylor Courtney and Jessi Dermon (CC) 6-4, 6-7, 10-7; Conley and Walker (CC) d. Wingham and Peyton (TC) 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.

Carroll County's boys and girls teams visit Oldham County today.

Trimble County girls tennis hosts Shelby County today. Both teams visit Carroll County on Tuesday.
