Southwestern’s Mitchell Cline has been named Ohio River Valley Conference boys track & field athlete of the week.

Cline, a junior, picked up league-best performances in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes last week, the later also broke his own school record.



— Southwestern girls tennis played three reserve matches against Austin Wednesday in the Lady Rebels’ home opener.

Emma Patrick defeated Austin’s Sydnee Long 8-1, Maddy Jacobs beat the Eagles’ Jordan Gustowski 8-0 and Trinity Stoner and Peyton Howell defeated Austin’s Audrey Morris and Brooklyn Begley 8-3.

Southwestern hosts Jennings County Friday.



Shawe’s jayvee girls tennis picked up two wins in a match at Lawrenceburg on Thursday.

Natalie Stewart won 6-3 and Reyna Ortiz won 6-2, both in singles. Briseda Reyes lost 6-3 in singles and Anne Stockman and Natalie Stewart lost 6-1 in doubles.

Shawe travels to New Washington Wednesday



Shawe junior high girls tennis lost 4-1 to Scottsburg Middle School on Wednesday.

Calli Alderman scored Shawe’s lone win in the loss.

On Thursday, Shawe defeated Borden 4-1. Lauren Grote, Alderman and Autumn Lathrem with wins in singles while Carson Cooke and Abbie Stewart claimed a win in doubles.



Madison Junior High’s co-ed golf team scored a pair of wins on Tuesday and Wednesday 192-211 over Austin and then 187-204 over Shawe.

Mitchell Adams and Luke Barron carded 47s to lead the Bears in the Austin match on Tuesday and Jackson Lynch and Landon True shot a pair of 49s. Clayton Benkert 52, Adam Traylor 56, Grace Bronkella and Grace Gasaway, both with 64s, and Emmi Dowell 68 played non-scoring rounds.

Barron 42 led the Bears against Shawe on Wednesday with Lynch carding a 47, Benkert a 48 and Adams and True both shooting 50s. Dowell 61, Traylor 62, Gasaway 65 and Bronkella 69 shot non-scoring rounds.

Madison is now 4-0 on the season.



Madison Junior High’s girls track defeated Southwestern on Wednesday 68-32.

Winners for the Bears were: Bridget Cline, high jump, 4-5; Jayme Lee, shot put; Breck Ralston, 100 hurdles; Ryanne Rose, 100 dash and 200 dash; Riley Perkins, Marley Stivers, Maddie Flowers and Erin Burkhardt, 400 relay; and Cadence Traylor, Emma Long, Stivers and Burkhardt, 1600 relay.



Southwestern Middle School’s tennis team defeated New Washington 5-0 on Monday.

In singles, Syrenia Hardy won 8-1l, Ashley Fulton won 8-0 and Autumn Gross won 8-1. In doubles, Natalie Larue and Parker Mefford won 8-6 and Sofia Alvarado and Kaylee DeWeese won 8-6.

Southwesternn (2-1) hosts Shawe Thursday.



Madison Parks Department will host the free Major League Baseball Pitch Hit and Run competition for area youth on Saturday, April 20 at Rucker Sports Complex.

Boys and girls are divided into four age divisions between seven and 14 with the chance to advance through four levels of competition. Participant’s age group is determined by their age as of July 17, 2019. All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and have a parent or guardian fill out a registration/waiver form prior to start of the competition or register online at PitchHitRun.com/find and for zip code 47250.

The Madison Parks & Recreation Department is now accepting applications for summer baseball and softball for boys girls ages seven to 15 by May 1.

The cost is $50. The deadline for Rookie, Minor and Major leagues is March 29. The deadline for upper leagues is May 10.
