Jefferson County golfers proved to be the class of the field by winning both individual and team honors at the Jennings County Invitational played at St. Annes Golf Course in North Vernon on Saturday.

Southwestern’s Hunter Mefford, who has signed to play for Purdue-Fort Wayne, fired an impressive three-under 69 to take low-medalist honors while Madison had three golfers shoot 80 or lower to combine for a 323 that was first among the 10-team field.

Madison’s score was seven strokes better than runners-up Whiteland, Greensburg and Columbus East, who each shot 330. Seymour carded a 333 and Jennings County a 335 followed by Trinity Lutheran 347, Austin 362, Shelbyville 377, Jennings County “B” 398, Seymour “B” 406 and South Dearborn 448. Shawe played but did not field a full team.

Trent Jamieson led the Cubs with a 76 while Drew Barron had a 77, Luke Ommen an 80 and Nate Hamby a 90. Landon McDowell shot a 99 in a non-scoring round.

Although Southwestern’s 336 was only good for seventh overall, the Rebels were right in the mix with the top schools. Austin Kramer’s 76 was fifth-best in the field while Trenton Hadley shot an 87, Camden Ashby a 104 and Steven Stillwell a non-scoring 120.

“Hunter had a great day. To shoot two-under par on that course is pretty impressive in itself but to do it as the defending champion is even more impressive. He had a really good day,” Southwestern coach David Bright said. “Austin played well coming in with a five-over 76 that was good enough for fifth in a pretty strong field. As a team we are getting better, dropping our score each week and really starting to knock on the door of the potential this team has. We have a few places to drop some more strokes and then we will see just how low we can go. I think breaking 320 is a real possibility for these kids on the right day.”

Unable to field a complete team, Shawe was led by Chandler Cole with a 96 while Jack Grote had a 108 and Trenton Purvis a 121.

Madison and Southwestern were both in action Monday with Madison hosting Floyd Central at Sunrise Golf Course and Southwestern playing Milan, South Ripley and Jac-Cen-Del at North Branch. Shawe’s plays Rising Sun and South Dearborn today at The Links at Rising Star Casino Resort.
