Local golfers Amanda Detmer and Jordan Griffith each have had strong showings in state-wide tournaments this week.

Detmer, a senior at Madison, currently sits tied for fourth place in the Indiana Women's Golf Association State Amateur Championships at the Tippecanoe Country Club in Monticello. Griffith, a recent graduate of Madison who will play at Vincennes University in the fall, finished tied for 14th in the stroke-play portion of the Indiana Boys State Junior Championships at the Bloomington Country Club.

Detmer braved the difficult conditions to shoot a four-over 76 on the course near Lafayette. Temperatures were in the low 60s with 25 mph winds that made it feel more like October than mid-July.

The scores reflected the conditions. Julia Potter of Indianapolis took the first-round lead with a two-over 74 while Trish Witherby of Richmond and Rachel Walker of Terre Haute were each three over.

Detmer's round including bogeys on Nos. 2, 4, 9, 11 and 12 but she did pick up a birdie on the par-5 No. 13.

The second round of three rounds got under way this morning.

Griffith, playing two hours to the south, had much better conditions and it showed with a one-over 73 on the second round on Tuesday. The highlight of his day was an eagle on the 474-yard, par-5 No. 8 that he coupled with two birdies to offset five bogeys.

On Monday, Griffith shot a 3-over 73 in the opening round. His total of 148 was good enough to place him in a tie for 14th-place, six strokes back of winner Alec Davis of Greencastle (67-75-142) and five back of Nicholas Osterberg of Indianapolis (68-75-143).

The Junior tournament now moves onto match play today where Griffith will face the 51st-seeded Tyler Meyer of Pendelton in the opening round. The match got under way at 9:14 a.m.
