Hanover College's men's basketball team remained unbeaten with a 61-57 win over Centre (Ky.) in the 20th-annual Collier Classic Sunday in Collier Arena.

Nine different players scored for Hanover, which won for the 11th time in its last 13 meetings with Centre.

Brian Gunter, a senior from Louisville, and Ryan Nowicki, a senior from Westfield, netted 10 points each, while Desmond Marks, a sophomore from Bloomington, matched his career-high with eight points to lead the Panthers.

Hanover (3-0) built double-digit leads by the midpoint of the first and second halves, but each time the Colonels whittled the margin to just one possession.

In the second period, Nowicki scored eight consecutive points over an 81-second span and Matt Wehner, a freshman from Pendleton, added a 3-pointer to help the Panthers take a 54-39 lead with 8:39 left in the game.

Centre, however, rallied behind a 14-2 run over a six-minute stretch to pull within a bucket in the final three minutes.

Josh Karsner hit two shots from long range, the Colonels made 6-of-6 free throws and freshman Blake Scinta scored from inside to trim Hanover's lead to 56-53 with 2:41 on the clock.

Gunter and Donovan Whiteside traded short-range jumpers to keep the margin at three with two minutes to play before Nowicki, who scored all 10 of his points in the second half, nudged the margin to 61-55 with a decisive 3-pointer with 1:28 to go.

Scinta followed with a basket in the paint to pull Centre within 61-57 with 1:11 and both teams exchanged turnovers on the next two possessions to maintain the four-point spread.

Hanover, with fouls to give and a pressuring defense around the perimeter, was able to limit the Colonels to an off-balance miss from 3-point range just prior to the buzzer to preserve the win.

Gunter led the Panthers with seven rebounds but Centre outrebounded the Panthers 37-27. However, Hanover committed a season-low five turnovers while forcing the Colonels into 16 miscues.

Karsner scored 15 points and Whiteside added 10 to lead Centre.

Hanover now heads to Hinkle Fieldhouse to play Butler University in a regular-season game on Tuesday. The Panthers played Butler in an exhibition game two years ago and the University of Kentucky's junior varsity team in the mid-1990s. Tuesday's game will mark Hanover's third against an NCAA Division I opponent. Hanover played Butler in the 1995-96 season and Murray State in the 1998-99 season.
