Hanover College recovered from a slow start to pull away for a dominating 73-46 win over Anderson in men’s basketball Wednesday at home.
Neither team could find the basket early and Hanover led just 9-5 nine minutes into the game. But over the final 11 minutes of the first half, the Panthers outscored Anderson 25-14 to take a 34-19 lead at the break then turned the game into a rout in the second half.
Kevin Williams and Matt Weimer each scored 14 points to lead Hanover while Isaac Hibbard had an impressive double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds. Weimer also had six assists and five rebounds.
Malik Laffoon scored 10 points and was the only player in double figures for Anderson (10-12, 7-8 Heartland).
Hanover’s win allowed the Panthers to remain one-game back of Franklin in the HCAC standings. Now 16-6 overall and 10-5 in the HCAC, Hanover travels to Bluffton on Saturday and to Transylvania on Wednesday.
Women win 8th-straight
Hanover’s women’s basketball team kept pace with league-leader Transylvania with a 67-62 win at Anderson on Wednesday.
The Panthers, who have won eight-straight, improved to 14-1 in the HCAC, one game behind eighth-ranked Transylvania. Hanover is five games ahead of third-place Franklin, which is 9-6.
Hanover actually trailed Anderson through three quarters and entered the fourth down 46-42. But the Panthers outscored the host Ravens 25-16 in the final quarter to pull out the win.
Four of the five Hanover starters reached double-figures in scoring, lead by preseason all-American Alexis Nall who had 17 points and five rebounds. Savannah Courtney had 16 points and four steals, Switzerland County’s Brooke Todd had 12 points and Kristin Mills had 10 points.
Payton Moore had 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead Anderson while Lexi Dellinger had 13 points.
Hanover, now 15-6 overall, travels to Bluffton on Saturday then welcomes Transylvania to campus on Wednesday for a first-place showdown.
