Hanover College’s Joe Sheryak sits in third place in the decathlon after five events at the Gregory Invitational at North Central University in Naperville, Illinois, on Wednesday.

Sheryak, a senior from Greenwood, scored a total of 3,383 points on the day. He won the 100-meter dash in 11.37 to collect 780 points, was second in the 400 dash in 51.29 for 756, third in the long jump at 6.89 meters for 788, third in the high jump at 1.81 meters for 636, and 11th in the shot put at 10.95 meters for 543.

The final five events — the 110 hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin and the 15,000-meter run — will be contested on Thursday.

Three female athletes also made the trip for Hanover. Erin Browning, a sophomore from Greensburg, finished fifth in the hammer throw at 49.27 meters; Erin Trimpe, a senior from New Palestine, was 10th in the pole vault at 3.38 meters; and Emily Clancy, a senior from Columbus, failed to place in the pole vault after scratching on all three of her attempts.

The Gregory Invitational concludes on Thursday.
