Madison used a strong full-court pressure defense and impressive depth to hold off defending state champion Jeffersonville 65-61.

Neither team held more than a seven-point lead.

The Lady Cubs jumped out to a quick 10-4 run just 2:30 minutes into the game with a pair of three-pointers by Kelsey Block and Hannah Cain. Kayla Lunsford capped the run with an offensive putback.

Jeffersonville quickly regrouped to narrow the deficit to 12-9 as freshman Emily Gray broke the pressure with a layup with 3:40 remaining prompting a Madison timeout.

Mandy Stoll came out of the timeout and nailed a three-pointer to push the lead to 15-9, but the Lady Red Devils responded again with a 7-0 run to close the quarter with a 16-15 lead.

Jeff started the second with another run capped off by a Lakin Roland trey to push the lead to 21-15 with 6:20 left.

Madison closed the first half with a 17-7 run of its own, using an intense full-court pressure that caused 12 second-quarter turnovers. The Lady Cubs were supported by their bench; Delanie Jones and Whitney Wynn led the charge as they took a 32-28 lead into halftime.

Jeffersonville played a box-in-one on Block most of the game. "With the box-in-one we didn't move the ball well to start." Madison coach Willie Humes said. "Then we picked her up. You gotta have that, without a deep team we are just mediocre."

Stoll came out in the third and paced the Cubs with a pair of three- pointers and the Cubs led 40-34 midway through the quarter and continued the tough full-court pressure. "Our press worked on them and made us a better team." Humes said. Jeff cut the lead to three then Macky Hecox scored consecutive buckets stretching the lead to 44-37 with 2:47 to go. The final minutes of the third saw both teams exchange turnovers and closed out with Madison hanging on to a 45-40 lead.

The Lady Cubs could not pull away in the fourth as they struggled from the free throw line, going just 11-28 for the entire game. "If we hit our free throws this is a much different story," Humes said. "We need practice, practice, practice, practice."

Jeffersonville kept whittling away and took a 56-55 lead with 3:47 remaining on a Lavada Roberson steal and layup. The teams traded buckets as Madison regained the lead on an Olivia Crozier bucket, 59-58. Jeff again answered as Roland hit a jumper taking a 61-60 lead. Madison's defense remained stout, and with 34 seconds left Whitney Wynn stepped to the line and drained a pair of free throws to put the Cubs ahead to stay 62-61.

After a defensive stop Lunsford hit one of two free throws then Stoll came through with a rebound bucket with eight seconds left to secure Madison's first win over Jeff in 10 years.

Madison was led in scoring by Stoll with 15 and Block with 10. Jeffersonville had three players do most of the damage as Vogen had 20, Roland 19 and Roberson 15. Hecox and Lunsford pulled down seven boards each for the Lady Cubs and Stoll and Cain each had 6 assists. Madison goes to 2-0 in the conference and plays New Washington Tuesday night. Jeffersonville is off until Saturday when it travels to Columbus East.
