Madison girls tennis dropped a 4-1 decision to Scottsburg on Monday in the Cubs’ regular-season finale.

Kourtney Neukam picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over the Warriorettes’ Kinley Harmon for Madison’s lone win but each of the other four matches were tight until the end.

“Our seniors fought very hard tonight, and two positions ended up in third sets,” Madison coach Kelsey Shaw said. “I’m really proud of all our girls tonight, especially our seniors, Wiley Gross, Emma Lostutter, Grace Brautigam and Renée Walker. They have all played hard all season, but they really left everything on the courts tonight. It didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but it made us better. Now we can focus on sectionals.”

Gross dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Lyla Waskom at No. 2 singles and Lostutter went down 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to Elle Fleenor at No. 3 singles. In doubles, Olivia Kelley and Walker lost 6-3, 6-6 (7-5), 6-3 to Eliza Mead and Kaytie Ray at No. 1 and Brautigam and Ana Reiff fell 6-1, 6-2 to Lindsey Pfaffenbach and Brinley Soloe at No. 2.

In exhibition doubles, Taylor Harsin and Caroline Kirby lost 7-5.

Madison opens the IHSAA Sectional at Greensburg today against the winner of Southwestern vs. Greensburg. Today’s other semifinal will feature three-time defending sectional champion Shawe Memorial against Jennings County.
