Madison got key baskets from Kaden Oliver, Nick Center and Mason Welsh to take the lead and hit enough free throws down the stretch to pull out a 57-55 win over Scottsburg in boys basketball Friday on the road.

The Cubs trailed by as many as nine against one of their biggest rivals and still faced a five-point deficit with 3:28 to play after a Hayden Cutter basket put Scottsburg ahead 53-48.

But Madison began chipping away. The freshman Oliver answered Cutter’s basket with a 3-pointer to close the gap to two, Nick Center tied the game on a steal and a basket and Welsh put the Cubs ahead 55-53 with a field goal with 2:27 to play.

The score remained 55-53 for the next two minutes before Welsh hit a free throw with 29 seconds to play to push the margin to three. Brantley Deaton hit a bucket on the other end for Scottsburg to cut the lead to one with 14 seconds to go and Center hit a free throw with nine seconds left to push the margin back to two.

Scottsburg had a chance to win the game but Treyton Owen’s 3-pointer at the buzzer went wide.

Madison shot an impressive 65% (24-for-37) from the floor compared to 50% (21-for-42) for Scottsburg but was unable to pull away. The Cubs were just 2-of-9 (22%) on 3-point attempts compared to 5-of-11 (46%) by the Warriors.

Oliver had an impressive overall game, scoring 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting with five assists and four steals. He also drew eight fouls on the night.

Luke Miller scored 11 points and Jackson Falconberry added eight for the Cubs.

Owens scored 18 points, Cutter had 13, Nicholas Sebastio 12 and Deaton 10 to lead Scottsburg.

Now 9-2 on the season, Madison is off to its best start to a season since the 1998-99 squad opened the year 10-1. That team ended up going 19-5 and winning the program’s last regional title.

The Cubs will attempt to keep the run going Saturday when they host another sectional foe in Charlestown.
