Madison’s Val Gonzalez capped a stellar swim season with one final school record in the IHSAA State Girls Swimming Championships at IUPUI in Indianapolis on Saturday.

Gonzalez, a junior exchange student from Ushuaia, Argentina, placed 14th in the finals of 50-yard freestyle, cutting her own school record in the event from 24.00 to 23.94. She was tied for 15th after Friday’s preliminary round.

Gonzalez, who was the first Madison swimmer to qualify for the state finals since Grace Lemen in 2011, also competed in the 100-yard butterfly finals on Friday but failed to make the cut after placing 24th in 58.58.

Else Fretz, a sophomore from Northridge, won the 50 free championship in 22.88.

Gonzalez’s performance netted her team three points and Madison officially played 45th overall. Carmel scored 413 points to blitz to its 33rd-consecutive state championship. Franklin was second with 167.5.

The boys swimming state tournament begins this week with the sectional preliminaries on Thursday at Floyd Central.
