New Washington pulled away in the second quarter to defeat Shawe 64-42 in boys basketball Saturday in Madison.

The host Hilltoppers led 13-11 at the end of the of the first but New Washington outscored Shawe 14-5 in the second and pull away from there.

Shawe led 9-2 early thanks to a strong start combined with poor shooting by New Washington. The Mustangs then closed the period with a 9-4 run to cut the lead to two.

The second period was all New Washington as the Hilltoppers struggled to take care of the ball, committing five turnovers in the period, and also struggled from the free-throw line. That allowed the Mustangs to capitalize and take the lead for good.

The second half saw New Washington heat up fast to hit five consecutive 3-pointers out of the break, which allowed the visitors to take control of the game for good. The Mustangs were 9-for-13 from behind the arc in the second half to ride that shooting to the win.

Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers didn’t help themselves from the foul stripe, making only 7-of-16 for the game, and missing several front ends of the one and bonus to allow New Washington to pull away.

“In the first half I was really proud of my team’s effort. We missed the front end of the one and one three times, you take that we’re down maybe three at half instead of eight,” Shawe coach Dan Hambrick said. “I think the things we need to do are fixable. We need figure out our defense, get our hands up and not give so many good looks. They hit a lot of 3s on us and we have to change that and get out on the shooters.”

The Hilltoppers fell to 1-1 on the season with the loss and open Ohio River Valley Conference play Tuesday when they travel to Jac-Cen-Del. Shawe then hosts Southwestern Friday as part of a boys-girls doubleheader.
