Ryle’s size and experience was too much for Trimble County to overcome in a 69-44 girls basketball loss Tuesday in Bedford.

Trimble County fell behind 23-15 by the close of the first quarter and it didn’t get much better after that. Ryle led 39-25 at halftime and 59-36 after three quarters.

Despite the lopsided loss, Trimble County coach Kerrie Stewart is hopeful that the chance to play a bigger school will pay dividends down the road.

“They were a very good basketball team. They were big and they were physical,” Stewart said. “Their press hurt us a bit early on but you want to play these kinds of teams to get better. Steel sharpens steel and this will only help us.”

Ashley Brierly and Cheyenne Clark led Trimble County with 10 points each while Shelbe Black added eight.

Carly Lange scored 23 points and Mallory Schwartz scored 17 to lead Ryle.

The one thing that Stewart was pleased with was her team’s ability to get to the line. While the Raiders hit free throws at just a 61 percent clip, they did go to the foul stripe 23 times, knocking down 14.

“It was nice to see us be aggressive and draw fouls and get to the line,” Stewart said. “Of course you want to shoot them better but good things happen when you’re aggressive.”

Trimble, now 11-8 on the season, faces another stiff challenge when the Raiders travel to Collins (11-8) on Friday. That game was originally scheduled to played Thursday but has been moved to Friday as part of Collins’ homecoming festivities. The game starts at 6 p.m.
