Madison's wrestling team competed in the John Hurrle Memorial Invitational at Arsenal Tech on Saturday.

The Cubs finished fifth out of the 16 teams and placed nine wrestlers in the top 10.

"We only brought nine of our guys and sent a couple of our first year guys down to the Charlestown JV invite so they can get more experience," Madison coach Tyson Skinner said. "So to place this high against teams that had full lineups of 14 is impressive and we looked like a different team than what we had on Thursday against Batesville."

Junior Mitchell Sandlin finished as the invitational champion at 195 pounds, winning the title in convincing fashion with a pin over ninth-ranked Desean Mills of Arsenal Tech.

Sophomore Chayce Young (126 pounds) and junior Jordan Partee (152) both placed third overall with Young going 3-1 on the day while Partee was 4-1.

Other finishers for the Cubs were: Trenton Dempler, fifth, 3-2 at 120 pounds; Hunter Stivers, fifth, 4-1 at 138; Evan Young, seventh, 3-2 at 145; Alex Moore, seventh, 2-2 at 182; Tanner Young, ninth, 3-2 at 160; and Chris Tingle, 10th, 2-3 at 132.

Madison competes in the Hoosier Hills Conference Duals at Jeffersonville starting Nov. 30.

Rebs open at Batesville

Southwestern opened the season at Batesville on Saturday.

Austin Spray went 4-1 on the day with his only loss coming a weight up at 145 pounds. Matt Hedges was 3-2 at 220 pounds.

"Although we did not pick up a win as a team we had several promising performances," Southwestern coach Brandon Brawner said. "We wrestled like we thought we would. The first weekend is to work out all the jitters and bugs. Hopefully we did that and can continue to grow.

Matt (Hedges) had a great weekend and had the most exciting match of the day losing by one against Batesville. Matt showed a lot of heart today," Brawner said. " And Cody Holman had a great day of action at 106."

Southwestern hosts Seymour for a dual meet on Tuesday.
