All three local girls swim teams closed out their seasons with the finals of the IHSAA Sectional at Floyd Central on Saturday.
Southwestern’s Belle Crawford had the top individual performance by local athletes, finishing fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.99. She was also eighth in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.80.
Crawford’s teammate Julia Worcester broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke for the second time in three days by placing sixth in 1:15.27.
Switzerland’s Allison Furnish and Madison’s Emily Nay were the only other local swimmers competing in an individual finals. Furnish placed seventh in the 100 freestyle in 58.48 while Nay was eighth in the 100 butterfly.
The highest finish by local swimmers belonged the Madison 200 medley relay team of Lucy Lynch, Anne Grady, Emily Nay and Trinity Stoner, who placed fourth in 2:08.08. The same quartet placed fifth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:53.65 while Katie Royce, Callie Anderson, Tabetha Jameison and Andie Royce-Miller were eighth in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:30.05.
“The girls had an exceptional weekend of swimming, collecting 24 best times over the course of the prelims and finals between Thursday and Saturday,” Madison coach Ashley Schutte said. “The courage and trust these ladies placed in our overall process and preparation paid big dividends for them at the perfect time in our season.”
Switzerland County had two relays compete in finals with Furnish, Brooke Johnson, Deanna Voris and Alisha Detmer placing fifth in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:16.89, and sixth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:54.11.
Southwestern’s Amiah Owen, Worcester, Crawford and Audrey Bare were sixth in the 200 medley relay in 2:10.65.
Other finishes for Madison were: Stoner, 10th, 50 free, 27.69 and 11th, 100 free, 1:00.68; Nay, 11th, 100 back, 1:12.16; Royce, 12th, 200 IM, 2:44.29 and 13th, 500 free, 6:16.28; Anderson, 12th, 100 fly, 1:15.35 and 16th, 200 IM, 2:51.39; Grady, 12th, 100 breast, 1:24.19 and 15th, 100 free, 1:03.34; Jameison, 13th, 100 back, 1:14.83; and Lynch, 16th, 50 free, 30.01 and 16th, 100 back, 1:17.71.
Other finishes for Southwestern were: Crawford, Owen, Bare and Worcester, ninth, 400 free relay, 4:32.88; Worcester, 10th, 200 free, 2:09.96; and Owen, 14th, 100 back, 1:15.17.
Johnson, Josie Stogsdill, Voris and Detmer placed 10th in the 200 medley relay in 2:29.43 for Switzerland while Furnish was 11th in the 200 free in 2:14.28.
Floyd Central scored 513 points to run away with the sectional team title while Jeffersonville was second with 462, Seymour was third with 331 and New Albany was fourth with 196. Madison was fifth with 138, Southwestern placed eighth with 92 and Switzerland County was ninth with 86.
Switzerland County’s boys will face off against Charlestown at New Washington on Wednesday. The next meet for all schools in the boys sectional preliminaries at Floyd Central on Thursday, Feb. 20.
