Southwestern’s boys picked up 11 individual wins to claim a team victory while Switzerland County’s girls edged Jac-Cen-Del by the narrowest of margins in a four-way track & field meet at Southwestern on Thursday.

Southwestern’s boys scored 90 points to easily best runner-up Jac-Cen-Del with 59 points. Trinity Lutheran was third with 41 and Switzerland County fourth with 36. Switzerland’s girls scored 68 points to edge Jac-Cen-Del by half a point. Southwestern was third with 59 and Trinity Lutheran fourth with 32.5.

Southwestern’s Mitchell Cline picked up three individual wins to lead the Rebels on the day. Cline started off with an impressive win in the long jump at 18 feet, 7.5 inches and then won the 100-meter dash in 11.47 and the 200 dash in 23.32.

Owen Bates won two events, the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches, and the 110 hurdles in 17.19. Other wins for the Rebels were: Jacob Grider, 400 dash, 55.25; Caleb Ream, 300 hurdles, 42.81; Bradley Winston, 3200 run, 10:51; the 3200 relay, 9:44; the 400 relay, 46.19; and the 1600 relay, 3:43.9.

“This is obviously a really talented team and their performance tonight was fun to watch. But they still have a lot of room to improve,” Southwestern coach Zac Nussbaum said. “For this team to get where they want to be the leadership has to get better and the focus has to improve. But with the type of kids we have I have no doubt that they will get there.”

Zach Howlett picked up a pair of wins for the Switzerland boys in shot put at 44 feet, 9.5 inches and the discus at 137 feet, one-half inch.

Other top finishes for the Southwestern boys were: Kaden Zellers, second, 100 dash, 12.14; Gavyn Mundt, second, 800 run, 2:18.69; Winston, third, 1600 run, 5:01; Devin Ruebush, third, 400 dash, 1:02.9; and Trevor Smith, third, 300 hurdles, 46.72.

Other top finishes for the Switzerland boys were: Cory Taulbee, second, 110 hurdles, 17.44; J.W. Goldsberry, second, 200 dash, 25.03; Coby Manbeck, third, 3200 run, 12:42; 3200 relay, third, 11:16; and 400 relay, 50.9.

Switzerland County’s girls had six individual wins with Aleiah Thomas matching her career-high in the high jump at 5 feet, 4 inches and Leah Anders leading a top-three sweep in the 800 run in 2:31.6.

Other wins for the Swiss girls were: Abby Niswander, 400 dash, 1:06.59; the 3200 relay, 12:02; the 400 relay, 55.16; and the 1600 relay, 4:31.

Ashton Goode won two events for the Southwestern girls, claiming the long jump at 14 feet, 7.5 inches and the 100 dash in 13.69. Ashleigh Ream won the 1600 run in 6:36.

Other top finishes for the Switzerland girls were: Alisha Detmer, second, high jump, 4-8 and third, 1600 run, 6:52; Aleiah Thomas, second, long jump, 14-4.5; Moriah Northcutt, second, 400 dash, 1:08.87; Ariel Oeffinger, second, 800 run, 2:41.06; Sydney Thomas, third, 100 dash, 14.53; Andrus, third, 800 run, 2:51.51; and Raylin Kappes, third, 200 dash, 28.59.

Other top finishes for the Southwestern girls were: Natsuki Fukazawa, second, 100 dash, 14.28; Goode, second, 200 dash, 28.31; Kirsten Geary, second, 3200 run, 15:58; 3200 relay, second, 13:16; 400 relay, second, 56.41; 1600 relay, second, 4:48; Kylie Eccles, third, long jump, 13-9.25 and third, 300 hurdles, 52.12; Mary Schroeder, third, 100 hurdles, 18.3; and Julia Worcester, third, 400 dash, 1:11.37.

Switzerland County returns to action on Tuesday when it competes in the Tiger Relays at Lawrenceburg. Southwestern’s next meet is Thursday, April 18 at South Dearborn.



McAllister has Shawe’s lone win at Rising Sun

Shawe track & field competed in a four-way meet at Rising Sun on Thursday with Grace McAllister picking up the Hilltoppers’ lone win.

McAllister won the girls 300-meter hurdles in 56.71 and was third in the 100 hurdles in 18.26, fourth in the shot put at 24 feet, 8.5 inches, and fifth in the 100 dash in 14.64. Izzy Lewis was fourth in the 200 dash in 31.5.

Bryan Avalos was third in the boys 3200 run in 11:55 and fourth in the 1600 run in 5:31.67. Henry Grote was fourth in the 100 dash in 12.44 and fourth in the 400 dash in 1:01.24, Joseph Lisle was fourth in the 200 dash in 26.15 and fifth in the long jump at 15 feet, Matthew Binzer was fourth in the 3200 run in 15:22, and Louis Liu was fifth in the 200 dash in 26.72 and fifth in the 1600 run, 5:31.8.

South Ripley won the girls meet with 90 points while Rising Sun was second with 52, Oldenburg was third with 49 and Shawe was fourth with 14.

Oldenburg claimed the boys team title with 88 points, South Ripley was second with 66, Rising Sun was third with 50 and Shawe was fourth with 17.

Shawe returns to action on Saturday when it competes in the Sam Summer 1A Invitational at Borden.
