Shawe senior guard Kate Grote missed Thursday’s game after injuring a knee Tuesday at Henryville. She is averaging 22 points per game and stands just 60 points short of the Lady Hilltoppers’ career scoring record.
A wounded Shawe squad was no match for Milan as the Hilltoppers lost 50-10 in girls Ohio River Valley Conference basketball Thursday on the road.

The Hilltoppers lost senior Kate Grote to a potential season-ending knee injury in Tuesday’s loss to Henryville. Grote is supposed to be evaluated today and will know more about the extent of her injury.

“She is injured but we will not know the details until tomorrow sometime,” Shawe coach Terry King said. “We just have to hope for the best. We mostly feel bad for her. We’re all pretty upset. It’s a massive loss for sure.”

Without Grote, who is averaging just under 22 points per game and is just 60 points shy of the school’s career scoring record, the Hilltoppers simply didn’t have enough firepower to keep up with a much taller and deeper Indians squad.

Milan jumped out to a 22-0 lead after the first quarter and although the Indians cooled considerably in the second, they still led 25-5 at halftime. Another big quarter by Milan in the third — this one 18-2 — turned the game into a rout.

Abigail Hill and Phoebe Grote scored three points each to lead Shawe while Grace McAllister and Lina Leatherman had two points each. The 10 points was the fewest Shawe has scored in a game since a 42-10 loss to Christian Academy in the 2011-12 season.

Cionna Bailey scored 16 points, Courtney Bruns had 14 and Lauren Roell had 11 to lead Milan.

Shawe falls to 4-16 overall and 0-5 ORVC. The Hilltoppers’ next scheduled game, at South Central on Saturday, has been canceled due to the team not having enough players. Shawe dressed just six players for Thursday’s game.

Shawe will next see action on Jan. 22 when the Hilltoppers host Christian Academy.
