After knocking off tourney favorite Murray in double overtime on Wednesday, Trimble County's run in the girls All "A" Classic State Finals was derailed Friday in a 65-48 loss to Newport Central Catholic in Frankfort.

Playing at the Frankfort Convention Center, Trimble led the Thoroughbreds 1-0 and 3-2 and then chased Central Catholic the rest of the game.

Catholic forged a 21-15 lead after a quarter and 36-25 at halftime. The Raiders cut into that by four in the third quarter by outscoring NCC 12-8 in the period but Newport iced the game in the fourth by making 18 trips to the foul line and hitting 13 to win the game going away.

Leading 3-2 in the first quarter, Trimble made five early turnovers to allow Newport Central Catholic to ease out to a 12-3 lead as the Raiders went over three minutes without a score.

Trimble finally answered with a 6-0 run when Jessie Dunlap scored on a backdoor cut, Mila Consley hit a short jumper and Paige Black hit to pull to within 12-9 as part of a larger 8-1 run that cut NCC's lead to a basket at 13-11 on a 10-footer by Black.

Trimble was still within a point at 16-15 with under a minute left in the opening period when a Ansley Davenport 3-pointer sparked a 7-1 Newport run that finally gave the Thoroughbreds some breathing room for good.

A 7-0 Newport run gave Catholic its first double-digit lead of the game at 32-21 on a 15-footer by Nicole Kiernan midway through the second period and Catholic led 36-25 at halftime despite a late deep 3-pointer by Trimble's Shelbe Black that had cut the lead to 32-25.

After hitting seven big 3-pointers in the win over Murray on Wednesday, the Raiders managed just one trey in seven attempts Friday. Trimble was 20-of-50 from the field overall to Newport's 18-of-40 but Catholic was 3-of-10 from beyond the arc.

In the end, however, it was Catholic's ability to get to the free throw line - and make those shots - that turned an otherwise close game into a rout by the end. The Thoroughbreds took 2 1/2 times the number of free throws that Trimble was awarded (35-10) and made 26 to just seven by the Raiders for a plus-19 in the category.

Newport also outrebounded the Raiders 36-28 but the teams were deadlocked 16-16 in second chance points. Catholic had 22 turnovers to 21 by Trimble and the Raiders had 14 steals to 17 by NCC.

Newport's Kiernan led all scorers with 21 points to go with seven rebounds while teammate Alexus Mayes added 19 points and nine rebounds and Michaela Ware scored 10 and dished out nine assists.

Paige Black led Trimble with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals while Dunlap and Kaylee Clifford scored eight each and Consley and Shelbe Black had seven points and four rebounds each.

Newport Central Catholic (19-2) moves on to play Danville - a 60-58 winner over Bishop Brossart on Friday - in today's semifinals. The winner of that game will play the winner of Saturday's Glasgow-Owensboro Catholic semifinal at noon on Sunday in a game that will be televised live on FS South.

Trimble (13-6) will now play District 29 rival South Oldham (5-12) in a big district seeding matchup on Monday in Bedford, Ky.
