While the Indiana high school basketball season is already in full swing, the Kentucky season both girls and boys gets set to kick off next week.

Trimble County girls and boys basketball returns several key returners for the 2019-20 season and optimism is high that the Raiders can improve the win total from a year ago. Here is a look at both teams.

Trimble County Girls

Continuing a rebuilding mode that has spanned over the last couple seasons, Trimble girls basketball posted a 6-22 mark a year ago with a young roster that was still learning to play at the varsity level. The Raiders had just one senior and two juniors on the roster but now the woes of last season could play big dividends when the new season starts.

With nearly the entire roster returning, improvement continues to be on the mind of Trimble and head coach Kerrie Stewart is expecting an upward trend and a renewed sense of enthusiasm for her team that kicks off the season in December.

“We are looking forward to our season and believe we are a much improved basketball team,” Stewart said. “We had a number of girls in the gym during the offseason working on individual skills. Our motto this year is ‘Make ‘Em Believe.’ Our players are committed to the time, energy and effort needed to prove to everyone that we can compete.”

The Raiders return nearly 100 percent of its scoring that includes leading scorer Shelby Wilcoxson, a junior who averaged 17.2 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game last year. Senior Abby Ponder is back after averaging 8.7 points per game and another senior, Colby O’Conner looks play a bigger role after averaging 5.6 points per contest.

A slew of returners — Emma Ginn, Emma Horn, Gracie Bromwell, Gracie Jent and Danielle Craig — played in nearly each of the 28 contests last year and are back, hoping to add to Trimble’s depth and provide productive minutes on the floor.

“We will still be young in some positions but our players have court maturity as we have spent the past couple of years growing and developing together,” Stewart said of her roster. “I believe we will be much better shooters this year and I hope that as time progresses, we will become more aggressive defenders.”

Trimble opens the season on Monday at home against Frankfort.

Trimble County Boys

The Raiders ushers in a new era as first-year head coach Marcus Mumphrey takes over a Trimble group that finished with a 13-15 record last season.

Despite losing seven seniors from that group, the returning Raiders spent the offseason putting in the work it will take to fill the void left by the departing class while also adjusting to a new style and a new head coach. Mumphrey is pleased with what he has seen so far and is implementing a new style both on-and-off the floor.

“We spent a great deal of time focusing on fundamentals and developing individual weaknesses,” Mumphrey said. “Our perceived strengths this year will depend primarily on our mindset. For us, advancing each student-athlete in life and sport through hard work and commitment is the ultimate outcome in our program and season.”

On the court, the Raiders return a group that includes four seniors and four juniors with the biggest return being leading scorer Reece Webster, who averaged 17.2 points per game as a junior and was an All-Courierarea selection a year ago. Now in his senior season, Webster will be relied upon to carry the scoring load, especially early on as the rest of the roster looks to replace over 30 points per game that graduated.

A pair of seniors in Austin Cissell and Beau Turner saw action last year and look to aid Webster more after averaging just 3.8 points per game and 2.3 points per game, respectively. Larry Lathan, a senior, comes to the varsity roster and four juniors — Cameron Blackaby, Dylan Jennings, Ryan Long and Jace Ogburn — all saw varsity minutes a year ago but will see those minutes increase significantly as their roles grow bigger.

“We are very capable of physically playing with most teams,” Mumphrey said. “The challenge is staying mentally plugged in for the entire game. Our goal is progress more than perfection. In order to achieve this goal as a team, we intend on approaching and reviewing wins and losses with that same idea in mind.”

Trimble boys open their season on Monday as well when they travel to Grant County.
