Trimble County started strong, finished strong and rolled to a 71-50 win over Owen County in the opening round of the All “A” Classic Eighth Region Tournament on Tuesday at home.

The Raiders jumped on Owen with a 15-3 run to open the game and survived foul trouble to keep the lead at 12 at halftime. Trimble then turned on the jets in the second half, leading by as many as 27 while cruising to the win.

For Trimble coach Ron Couch, it was a welcome performance after watching his team get destroyed by 48 points at Southwestern, the top-ranked team in Indiana’s Class 2A, on Friday.

“After the Southwestern game, we had a little talk about fight. It’s all about fight. That’s just effort. It doesn’t take ability, it doesn’t take anything other than doing it,” Couch said. “Everything needs to be a battle and we need to win every possession, every pick. Tonight, we went in with that mindset and that’s what we did. And the thing is there’s more there. We need to keep pushing and keep fighting.”

Trimble County (6-8) showed that fight right from the start. Reece Webster took the opening tip and drove right to the basket, drawing a foul. A possession later, Evan Stevens jumped the passing lane for a steal and raced to the other end for an easy basket.

Baskets continued to come easy for the Raiders over the first eight minutes. Webster scored eight points and Logan Clifford had five as Trimble raced out to that 15-3 lead and 17-5 advantage after one quarter.

But fouls hit the Raiders — particularly Webster — in the second period and although Trimble was unable to expand its lead, it was able to tread water and go into halftime with the same margin it had after the first quarter.

Trimble then re-established control in the second half. Webster, Ben Stevens and Will Kunselman combined for 12 points as the Raiders pushed the lead to 20 (40-20) and Trimble continued to play add on throughout the fourth, reaching 71-44 before Couch went to his bench.

Webster shrugged off his brief foul trouble to score 26 points and lead all scorers but eight different Raiders scored in the game, all of whom had at least four points, led by Grant Weaver’s 10.

“We go as Reece goes but it’s nice when everybody scores like that,” Couch said. “It makes a difference because (opponents) can’t just focus on Reece. It’s a nice plus to have and it’s nice to have people that have that mindset.”

Isaac Smith scored 15 points and Noah St. Clair had 12 to lead Owen County (2-12).

Trimble County’s reward for claiming an opening round win is a date with regional favorite Walton-Verona, which looked the part in an 80-42 whipping of Williamstown in the second game of the night.

The Raiders have already had an up close and personal look at Walton, losing 81-40 at home on Dec. 5 but Couch is excited to get a chance at a rematch.

“We still haven’t played our best basketball. Hopefully, Thursday we can come back ready to fight again,” Couch said. “We’ll come back tomorrow and see where we are in practice and go from there.”
