For the second time in two years Shawe Memorial boys basketball is looking for a new head coach.

Sherron Wilkerson, hired by Shawe last July, tendered his resignation and met with his players this afternoon to inform them that he would no longer be with the program.

“As of 1 p.m. this afternoon, Coach Sherron Wilkerson has officially resigned as boys basketball coach at Shawe Memorial,” said Shawe Athletic Director Steve Sims.

Wilkerson was 4-19 in one season with the program including a win over Medora in the Hilltoppers’ sectional opener.

Wilkerson was hired by Class 1A Shawe less than a month after former head coach Mike Brown also resigned after one season to take the head coaching position at Class 3A Salem High School.

“We are saddened to see Coach Wilkerson leave our program. It was a pleasure to get to know Coach Wilkerson on both a personal and professional level,” the school said in a news release.

Although Wilkerson did not teach at Shawe, he does works locally for Vehicle Service Group in Madison as an account executive for Environmental Management Solutions.

While Brown was a veteran head coach when he arrived at Shawe, Wilkerson was known more for his background as a standout player who was continuing his love for the sport by moving into coaching.

Wilkerson played at Jeffersonville High School where he was a McDonald’s All-American, Gatorade Player of the Year and a high school state champion during his senior season before going on to play at Indiana and Rio Grande universities and professionally in the United States, Sweden, Latvia, Turkey, Brazil and Israel. He was honored on the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 1993 Silver Anniversary Team.

“Coach Wilkerson brought a lot of basketball experience and knowledge that we hope will carry on through these student athletes and all student athletes who will come up through the Shawe Boys basketball program in the future,” the release said.

Sims said the school has already begun its search for a new coach.

“We are now focused to find someone to come in and take over what Coach Wilkerson started with this team. Our administration is dedicated to finding the right person to lead these student athletes and to be a leader for not just Shawe basketball, but Shawe High School as a whole.”

Wilkerson took over a Shawe team that was 5-20 in one season under Brown, 5-42 in two seasons under Phil Kahn and 26-63 in four seasons under Matt Traylor. Shawe’s last winning season was 20-4 under former coach Jerry Bomholt — now at Class 2A Southwestern — that included a run to the regional finals.
